So many times we are pressured into wanting something that we really don’t need. Embracing simple living can help you to lead to more contentment. Making small adjustments to our thinking can make it easier to embrace a simpler life.

But the reality of all this more, more, more is also more of other things we don’t want to do. Buying more leads to needing to work more to make the money to pay for those items. The more you own the more time it takes to maintain those items. The more you depend on items the bigger the pull can be to upgrade when the new improved model comes out.

There is pressure to keep up with the what the neighbors have. There is pressure to provide these things that generations past didn’t even have to your kids. There is all this pressure to be like others.

But thankfully we have choices. We can choose to be different and be happy for our neighbors and their new things but not need them ourselves. We can choose to own fewer items and have more time to spend on people. It just takes adjusting the way we think about things. Adjusting your mindset to what is really important can make the biggest impact on the choices you make.

Appreciate What We Have

Being grateful and really appreciative for the things we have is a big step towards a more content life. If we are always looking to the next new big thing, we can miss the great things we already have. The great people that are in our lives. When we take the time to really think about what is important and count our blessing each day it helps us to focus on what is important. The wants that seem so important can start to fade away. Slowly the change in thinking will lead to a change in decisions which leads to a change in our lives.

Say Enough is Enough

Constantly being pushed to buy more and have more and do more can be so stressful. There is something wonderful in being able to let go and say, what I am is enough. What I have is enough. What I have to offer is enough. When you can switch from pursuing the wants in your life and concentrate on the true needs, those needs can be filled. Your attitude can change and happiness can come in where discontentment used to be.

Knowing that you are enough and you have enough is so freeing. You won’t constantly be striving for what you think you should be, or what you should own, or what you should do. You can just let yourself be enough.

Stop the Comparison

Constantly comparing ourselves to those around us does no good. It can steal the joy of what skills and wonderful things you are blessed with. Looking at what others have only tells us what is important to them. It doesn’t help us determine what is important to us. Knowing what is important and your own value can help you stop comparing yourself to others. We all have gifts to offer to others, and when we concentrate on what we can give instead of what we don’t have, we can truly bless others with our gifts.

Less Stuff = More Happiness

When you truly know what you need in this life the amount of stuff needed is so much less. There is less time spent acquiring it. Less time needed to work to provide it and more time for the things you really love.

If you only had a limited time left on this earth, what would be important for you to do? Who would be important for you to spend time with? What would be important for you to have? Those are the things that are true needs for each of us. Live today like there might be no tomorrow. The things that seem so important today can fall away and what is left is what you need to spend your time and money on.

Living a more content life in this day and age isn’t easy. What other tips could you add to the ones above to help fellow readers make changes to a more content and simple life? I would be so happy to have you share your tips below in the comments.
